A Simple GTK+ Music Player
posted on 08 May 2009 20:59 by exploitcatzActually, some full-blown music management applications like Rhythmbox, Banshee or Exaile are all doing their jobs just fine...
Also a capability to manage music library in an organized way should suit very well for my extra-large music library ...with loads of pirate stuffs, ofcourse - -'
Anyway, running those on my 7-year-old PC is sure a nightmare... that I prefer a simple playlist-based player instead :)
After being a big fan of Audacious for quite some time, now it's time to make a switch... Not that Audacious has gone wrong, but it's just me who get bored of the Winamp 2.x style :)
A List of Basic Requirements:
2. Ability to save/load playlist
3. Ability to randomly play the current list... not to shuffle the list and play them 1-by-1
4. Ability to scrobb playing stats to Last.fm :)
5. Ofcourse, a plain simple UI ...anything's fine but GTK+ is preferred
And finally I've come across a new player qualifying the above requirement... It's called Mesk ...which is really simple & just works :)
As far as I can see, Mesk still manages to do its job very well... Nonetheless the development isn't that active (latest release 0.3.2 was dated back to Jul 07) and there's no Debian package or repository for Mesk, but... who cares !?
PS. Nice music & some beer are seriously needed to deliver a quality work

Update:
A slight update here... It seems Mesk era would come to an end earlier than expected
It didn't take long til I realized that one most important requirement had been omitted, say... supported formats!! My dear Mesk seems to support somewhat very limited formats... At least it doesn't support FLAC (which increasingly take up my spaces with a very fast pace). This is definitely the last life-line for Mesk - -
Time to say goodbye
